For the eleventh year Jackson Electric Cooperative (JEC) awarded scholarships for area students to attend college. JEC gave $1,000 scholarships to ten deserving students who are the sons and daughters of JEC members with active electric accounts. Regardless of the school the applicant attends or plans to attend, the program is open to either graduating high school seniors or students currently enrolled in undergraduate studies at an institution of high learning.
Applications are available from area high school counselors and both JEC offices. The application is also available for printing in .pdf (Adobe Acrobat) format: Scholarship Ap.pdf (If you need to download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader click here.) The deadline for returning completed applications is 5 p.m. on March 31, 2011 to either JEC office. Interested persons may contact Kay Frels in the Edna Office (361-771-4425). Selections will be made by April 15, 2011. Actual funding occurs after JEC has received the recipient's copies of payment and registration in the fall. The recipient must maintain a 12-hour course load to be eligible for payment.
.High School Seniors interested in applying for a 2011 Scholarship must complete an essay on what they have done to prepare themselves toward a college degree. Additionally each applicant will need to submit a seven-semester high school transcript (plus any college work that is applicable) and fill out the JEC application to be used to verify membership status of parents.
Currently enrolled college students must complete an essay on their goals for the future and current college accomplishments. Each student must also provide a transcript from their current college and fill out JEC's application to be used to verify membership status of parents.
Funding for these scholarships comes from monies that would normally be escheated to the state. A portion of each year's escheated funds from unclaimed capital credit accounts are designated by State Comptroller’s Office to be used for these purposes. This is another benefit delivered by your cooperative membership and Jackson Electric Cooperative appreciates the opportunity to bring this service to you.
